What Do You Do When It's Rainy?

Playing games of course! I've finished Quake 4 recently (which was done really fast, since I used cheats).

Before going insane and 'you ***ing loser'-like, please let me explain why I used cheats.

The game is boring... there, I've said it. Of course it's a nice game if you want to blast a few grunts real quick, but still I think that Quake 1 was much more entertaining (by the way: in Quake 1 all the doors could open, in Q4 most of them are "locked").

Of course the graphics are all bumpy and crispy and whatnot, fighting against 2 enemies at once which will vanish after two seconds was never so much fun. Not.

And thus I've spent the last two days on completing Call Of Duty 2, which was much more entertaining! The absence of a physics engine (and a health bar) is a good thing. I only have one remark though:
Direct X9: 1024 x 768 everything on high and running quite smooth (except D-Day was a bit jumpy).
Direct X7: 1600 x 1200 (!), also everything on high and running ultrasmooth, you don't see shadows on clothes and such, but I think DX7 still looks good enough, so I'm playing Singleplayer with 9, and multi with 7.

You know, graphics aren't everything, if you must choose between CoD 2, F.E.A.R. or Q4, take CoD 2, and if you haven't played the first one plus expansion, pick them up too, both are as chaotic and compelling as the second one. The first ones also have more stealthier missions and more indoor environments (which I don't like so much, so I prefer CoD 2).

One negative remark though: still no German/Japanese/Italian campaign, why not? It would give some interesting new stories and settings... Oh well, maybe for the expansion pack.

I've also been playing Civ 4 a little... I am still too dumb to fully understand it, but I quite like it.

P.S.: again a game rant, I have to start talking about something else. Next time.

Autumn's Start

Woohoow! Autumn is in town, I really like this season (well, actually I like all seasons). I've given my blog a new theme (which I found somewhere on the internet, credits to the maker because I suck at making themes myself) to accompany this nice time of the year.

Going really fast to the holidays now (I like Christmas even more). Can't wait...

More updates later.

Tempus Fugit

And I just can't find the time to make a post...

I've been busy with various things, starting university for example, which has been quite fun so far.

I've also been playing various games (what did you expect), Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy in the US), and Total Overdose.

I haven't found the time to play Dragonshard yet.

Fahrenheit is a wonderful cool game with the best action sequences I've seen in an adventure game! I don't play adventure games that much (especially not the recent ones, I've played Broken Sword 1 and 2 though), but Fahrenheit was really fun. A bit disappointed that it was so short and so rushed at the end, hopefully the possible sequel will improve on that part.

Total Overdose is a complete no-brainer action game, a mix of GTA and Max Payne. It takes the style of GTA and the slowmo and bullettime of Payne, multiply that with a lot of explosion and you've got Total Overdose.

It's fun for a while, now if only GTA had these kind of moves and explosions, it would be super!

Oh well, I forgot all the rest I wanted to tell, so that'll have to wait for later...

P.S.: having problems viewing the special characters, like the Mu (µ), refreshing this page should do the trick, it's a blogspot problem probably.

First Point

We're back on track, well, sort of.

I've been revisiting some of my projects and have (finally) a new structure.

This blog, µacuyiko's Mindcube. An English blog about my life, thoughts, code, etc... Why "Mindcube"? A Mindcube is a cube in which you put your thoughts.

Mindpoint would have not enough dimensions, Mindline would be too linear, Mindsquare is already too often used. Mindcube is already used as well, so it's not my trademark.

Maybe I change it later to Mindhypercube or Mindwhatacubewouldbeiftherewerereallyelevendimensions.

I already have another blog, a Dutch one. It's not live yet and I will not post a link when it is.

I had plans for an online magazine, also Dutch, but that'll have to wait a bit.

All these (and other side-) projects are supervised by the Muzeron brand.
This blog is available at www.macuyiko.tk, the Muzeron main page at www.muzeron.tk.

This was a boring post. More interesting stuff coming later...

Long Time, No See

First of all I want to apologize for not updating you for over a month. But I've been thinking about some things lately (both personal- as project-based), and this blog (and other Muzeron projects) will be reincarnated soon.

So stay tuned...

MSN Versus Google, The War Is On

MSN Virtual Earth has gone live today.

It seems that this is basically a complete ripoff of Google Maps... Sigh. Oh well, what'd you expect? So, Google Maps or MSN VE, what'll it be?

Google has my support on this one, it's a company with a good policy which I can trust (although they did close my Adsense account for no reasons I could understand, I mean: can I help it that the same person keeps floodclicking my ads?).

Speaking of Google Earth, why not try Google Moon, or the Hybrid interface of Google Maps, which is rumored to use transparent .pngs, but since when can Internet Explorer render transparent png images?

MSN Messenger

For all you people who are using MSN Messenger and wanting to try the latest (7.5) beta out: here is a nice list of mirrors.

Be sure to download the 0160 build, so you can apply the Messpatch, it's on Mess.be (browse around the site to find it, Mess does not permit hotlinking), so you can remove all the unwanted garbage.

And why does Microshit keep putting their shortcuts, homepage, toolbars, and other stupid stuff in their Messenger installer file, making it unnecessary large, and why does it enable all those 'helpful options' by default so I must uncheck those boxes every time I install. Grrrr.

London

I've been following various news streams across the internet. Yesterday London was shook up by various explosions, and today, another terroristic attempt.

I find the people of London very brave, and they should definitely continue living their lives as normal as possible. I will not engage in a political discussion, but I find the 'zero-tolerance'/'shoot-to-kill' behavior the London police is using right now a good thing! Terroristic attempts like these and the people who organize them should be wiped out. Since 2001 countries around the globe live in fear of terrorists, and the terr'ists themselves are feeling proud because they're 'in the news again'.

Of course, there are people who say that 'they like the attention, so we should just ignore them'. I find this a very fatalistic view on the matter, if you ignore them, you also ignore their acts which cannot remain unpunished.

P.S.: I wish my English was better so I could phrase my thoughts better, but news like this makes me sad and angry. I have a feeling we're degrading into the Middle Ages again, so maybe we should use medieval ways of dealing with gangsters again, if it's the only way which gives results.

People of London, you have my sympathy!

Monday Again

It's been a while since my last post.

I've been watching stuff, mainly. First The Hitchhikers' Guide To The Galaxy, which was quite nice. Of course it is extremely difficult to make a movie out of Adams' books without embarrassing yourself, but they sure have tried, and actually made quite a good movie out of it. Actually, I hope they make a sequel (they still have enough books left). And since I watched it, I've been feeling an uncontrollable urge to wear a towel...

Second: Invader Zim complete. Yes it's the famous, spread over-the-whole-internet-cartoon, something everyone who calls himself an internet geek should've watched. I've laughed a few times, especially with the amazing Gir, and Ms. Bitters who reminds me of an old teacher I once had.

In China they are currently struggling to find a new title for Hаrrу Роttеr аnd thе Hаlf-Вlооd Рrincе, since Half-Blood can't be translated to Chinese without breaking the meaning (half-blood equals half-human equals half-beast there), they may chose another title.

Update: officials probably found out. Link is broken, no free book for you. (Just open your P2P app for godsakes.)

Nostalgia 2005

A few days ago I was digging in the gigantic archive of old floppy disks in the house, between which I found a really old game I used to play on my 386 when I was younger, and oh how fast did it run when we got that 486dx.

The game itself is a Boulderdash clone and is called Supaplex. Of course, I couldn't be bothered to install the game, since I do not have a 5¼ inch drive in my box anymore (who does?), and I do have Windows XP, which is extremely stubborn when it comes to playing old DOS games.

So I just queried the name on Google, and it came up with a lot of results. Of course, there are a lot of other and newer and better looking Boulderdash clones around, but the first result wasimmediatelyy on the spot: download it here, the game is still being maintained and updated so that even Windows XP users can play it.

An even better choice to download is Megaplex, which runs in a window, which plays sound! (Still no music though, which is not bad, because the music was terrible annoying ;).)

Controls are easy: arrow keys to move, press space with an arrow key to 'grab without moving' (try it), and hold space a long time to use a red disk (if you have any), which will explode, so get away quickly.

If you can't be bothered to do all that, you can go play a nice simple but challenging Planarity Flash Game.

Memo List

Because I was bored and my memory is having problems remembering things lately, I've put together a list for me with all the games I should keep an eye on. Please only read this if you're interested in my gaming needs, otherwise just ignore ;).
  • Call of Duty 2: it should be clear why, looks stunning and story will be immense again, too!
  • Brothers in Arms 2: maybe...
  • Bet on Soldier: again maybe, if I'm bored at the time of release.
  • F.E.A.R.: graphics looks amaaaazing!
  • Half Life 2 Aftermath: just one to have to complete the collection.
  • Quake 4: grew up with Quake 1, so... (Actually, that's a lie, I grew up with Jill of the Jungle and later Duke Nukem. That's Duke Nukem 1, mind you.)
  • Unreal Tournament 2007: woot, more killin'.
  • Star Wars Battlefront 2: maybe.
  • Commandos Strike Force: maybe.
  • Hellgate London: this is a weird one, could be interesting.
  • Prince of Persia 3: definitely!
  • Battlestations Midway: could be fun.
  • Star Wars Empire at War: must... Have... This! This is what Force commander should've been!
  • Age of Empires 3: also really necessary.
  • Paraworld: looks nice.
  • Outfront 2: the sequel to the extremely hard Soldiers, which I loved!
  • Fable: yes yes yes yes yes! A must-have in my opinion.
  • The Elder Scrolls 4: yes, that's Oblivion, said 'nuff.
  • Dungeon Siege 2: oh well, make it quick.
  • X3 Reunion: I hope this one will be better, because I still love space games.
  • Black and White 2: yup, also a must-have.
  • Spore: now this is a weird game, I must definitely try this one out.

This nice long list really fills the page :p. Of course I could make this list go on and on and on and... you get the point.

So, I'm not bored anymore, see y'all.

Project Gizmo

Project Gizmo is a new piece of software just like Skype. Add contact, make a profile, start talking.

I've used it for some time now, I must say it looks very clean and crisp, and is as easy to use as Skype (which seems to have updated it's website). The best of the two? I can't really say, Skype will become the MSN Messenger of VOIP: used by everyone, corporate, blah blah. Gizmo will then become the ICQ and others: trying to get a share and used by people who actually want and dare to try something new instead of following the horde.

So I leave them both installed. Now I just have to wait for my friends using any of the two, because the 'horde' I call my contacts are still using MSN Messenger...
It might take a few years before VOIP will become mainstream (especially in Belgium).
I wonder if there are other countries where people are already using lots of VOIP applications (apart from America and Japan and all those other high-tech countries).

Whoops

Oh God! Custom badly written img tags messing up the template aaaaah!
It's fixed now.

Too bad I had to resize the Sloganizer banner... Oh well.

Since I was on a Microsoft-rant in my previous post, I'm currently downloading the latest Lonhorn built (checks) 5048. Just to look if it's any nicer (and runs better than the previous built in VMware).
I will keep you updated.

Why Do I Have To Press Start To Shut Down My Computer?

Mess has a nice post somewhere about those 'What I'm Listening To'-messages you see in MSN Messenger, it seems that there are two other icons (apart from the headphones) too.

You can download a program which enables you to change your personal message and use these new icons (a game and office image). Since I'm too lazy too dig up the link from mess.be (which is anti-deeplink anyway), you can just download it (right click shave ass) from my EGEOFWS*.

What have those MSN Sandbox people done to start.com now? All you see is a random image, being

Oh well, you can still see them imitatining Google Personal here and here and here.

Busy Days

Here's a quick and filled linkdump for y'all.

A dog named fish has a nice blog entry which shows how they built the Lego Star Destroyer in 10 hours, you can also download a cool stop motion video which shows the whole process in around 4 minutes.

Wired News has a nice article about a clinic which treats web addicts. Slashdot also had a nice mention to this article: Windows software is boring and uninspired. Really?

Also, check out this cool experimental flash gallery.

I also had a nice article about AI. But I lost the URL (think it was also a Wired one). Basically it was about a VR agent interacting with students. The 3D agent was programmed to mimic the students' behavior 4 seconds after the student. For example: when someone moves his head up, the agent would do the same in 4 seconds.
Only 8 students recognized the mimicry. And students found the mimicking agent much more enjoyable than the one who just behaved 'normally'.
This type of mimicry was a known fact in the psychology of humans, but now the proof has been given that also computers can use this, thus creating better AI agents, better AI salesmen, perhaps?

And to close this post: Science and Art working together.

Daily Habbits

Whoops, forgot to mention that I actually passed for my exams...

In other news, SDP Multimedia is the best tool on Windows to save MMS streams, Alcohol 120% still remains the best tool for making ISO's, and Slashdot tells me that Science has put the 125 Science questions online, which is an interesting read.

Back And Right Into Summer

Finally, exams have ended. I had a lot of things to do before finally starting normal life again: cleaning stuff in the house as well on the computer, install latest drivers, check all the webcomics I'd missed (, etc...

The I could start playing GTA: San Andreas. I've finished all the missions now, and I must say, the game is great! It gave me the same feeling as when I ended Vice City which was: 'I want more!'

First of all: the map is huge, there are a lot of areas to travel to and explore in. The graphics have improved too. However, the engine - which was also used in GTA 3 (Liberty City) and GTA: Vice City - has had its best days. I can't wait for the next GTA which will take place in London, 60ties, if we may believe the rumors.

There is also a GTA coming out for the PSP, which I will buy together with Lumines, Wipeout, and a PSP, of course, which will come out in Europe in September... (Firmware 1.50 is hacked by the way, search for Swaploit, or even better, KXploit.)

I have a lot of other things to do (installing Battlefield 2 for example), I will post more and detailed when I have more time.

So fuck this shit and love to y'all homies, cause this dog is gonna check out town...

Counting Down

Muzeron states:
The Pirate Bay states: [...]

They're back, of course they are back. They had said before that their shutdown were only rumors. It was a nice joke to give them some spare time for preparing the launch of version 2 of their tracker and website (which is really unbelievable now). In about 10 languages (Dutch too), and more torrents than ever before. Means that we can download all the Linux distros again ;).

I'm going to test out the Hypercube tracker out soon too. There are a lot of other projects waiting too! A new site, finalizing my webradio thoughts, an online game, an online OS (name SnOS, more information about that later), and playing a lot of games.

The problem at the moment? Exams, I've already talked about them and in a few days they finally start. When I'm done with that it's off to university!

So I'll see you in a few weeks (no computer use during exams, it's for my own good)! I'll miss the internet and stuff, but coming back always gives a new, fresh feeling to the whole scene so...

Bye.

I'm No Good At Inventing Titles

The Pirate Bay states:
Today the swedish anti-piracy organisations raided The Pirate Bay and
confiscated the computers running the tracker. This probably means the end
of The Pirate Bay and we, the crew, apologize for all loss of income caused
by our activity over the years.

Poor Piratebay, I thought they were immune to legal threats and stuff like that since they were hosted in Sweden. Seems even Sweden isn't as neutral as it seems.

Where will I find my Linux iso's now? It seems that the other trackers/sites/news sites haven't really noticed it yet.

Oh well, not much else to mention at the moment, here's a quick game.

May Is The Sunny Promise That Summer Is Bound To Keep...

...at least it says so on my Coca-Cola calendar, here, it's raining again.

Which means that we have a good reason to stay inside and play Psychonauts, for example. At first sight I thought 'Oh god, not another kiddie game!' (Altough Lego Star Wars wasn't that bad either.) But I must say I've been really enjoying this platform game (the last good platform game I played was Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, not the second one). It contains a nice deal of humor, and the gameplay is done really good! Camera movement is perfect, control is as well. (I wish that Beyond Good and Evil was a better game now, so I would play it again.) Also, you can't really die. Like, Game Over, at least not that I know, which is also a plus for me (I hate reloading and redoing stuff).
The only thing I hate is the ongoing search for figments (which give you a better rank, and thus power) and arrowheads (think gold or credits), which can consume time. I want to get on with the story (best before those exams start) and see the ending, I will collect all these rare items when I'm done with the story (I did the same with Neverwinter Nights)...

Extra long post... I've downloaded Netscape today. As you could probably suspect, I grew up with Netscape. And seeing that N-logo with the passing... comets?, stars? again was so nostalgic. Opera is a good browser, but too crowded. Internet Explorer is nice too, but too old and too unsecure, if you're dumb, Firefox is nice but Netscape is even better since you can surf pages with either the Firefox (Gecko) or IE engine! Nice... (though I mostly use the Gecko engine).
About that 'dumb' part... I've been using IE for years, always updated, never clicked on stupid ads (those who try to look like a Windows window), and disabled ActiveX. Problems? Never. Spyware? Nothing too bad (only cookies and normal stuff). Viruses, nope. Toolbars? Forget it.
I mean what's wrong with people that they keep want to know what the weither is like on their traybar, or want to earn money while they sleep. Or want a bigger... paycheck. Wathever, I might do a nice prank-special-haha-funny-page with the most stupid ads and adware. Should be fun. So Netscape is good.

I'm downloading Fedora right now, I can't decide to use FC3 or SuSE Pro 9.latest...
I've also downloaded the latest Knoppix and Whoppix. Whoppix has such a nice video about WEP cracking (you know, the in 3 minutes or more thing). I love it, I'm going to make my whole city wireless, mainly for comforting my soon-coming-to-daddy PSP, but also to crack the WEP key I set... Should be rewarding. Should give experience to surf anywhere I want ;).

Bye for now...

The Sun Shines

Finally, here in Belgium the sun is coming trough at last. It's been a full, long week.

I performed yesterday (and the day before) in a play in our local theatre, I was playing King Lear. Thanks to everyone who helped and watched the production, it's been really fun working with you guys! I'll miss it.

Enough whining, I'm still waiting for my hard disk to be delivered. And I'm working on an internet game. More about that later. Too bad the exams are right behind the corner.

Newsforge has a nice article about a Linux user making the step to Windows, it's a nice read.

Also, check out the Musicthing blog, it has really cool articles about how all those "corporate sounds" (Intel, THX,...) were created. Plus you can download them. Fact is that I'm really fond of these marketing sounds and/or videos, so I've enjoyed reading trough all this.

Week Starts

Hello everyone, I'm checking some E3 videos out from SW: Empire at War, the game looks pretty cool. I'm also waiting for Black and White 2, Age of Empires 3, and my PSP.

That's right, PSP has won the battle, it will be a PSP and not a x360. But the PS3 has my interest too!

However, buying all these stuff does cost money. So I'd appreciate it if you give to top Google banner a little single click - thanks!

Enough whining now. Systm is the new show from the creators of thebroken. thebroken was quite good, but still a bit beginner-like, made for kids (TM) or something like that, I'm going to check it out now and we'll see what is has to offer, expect comments...

Sunday

I just saw Star Wars III, and I must say that it's pretty good, but it's not anything really special. The dark tone of the movie is nicely worked out, but the acting and story could've been a little better.

I you would like to take a peek in the mind of a Sith Lord, you can still check out The Darth Side, an extremely well-written blog about the daily happenings in the live of Darth Vader. It's a must-read. A pity that the author has stopped the story already though. (I first thought this was some marketing campaign from Lucasarts, but that doesn't seem to be the case.)

I've been using the Personalize Google feature for a few days now, and I must say it's quite good, I like seeing my new mails right from my homepage.

Map The Internet

I've downloaded the DIMES Agent yesterday, and I must say I really don't know what it's purpose is. Slashdot says that it's able to generate nice looking graphs (see here and especially here), and also on my computer it was able to generate fairly good looking lines, dots, and numbers.

If you're into resource wasters, other cpu cycle killers you can try are: SETI @ Home (find E.T.), World Community Grid (battle cancer), and many others.

That Lonely Feeling

When browsing the internet or while working I always have something playing trough my headphones. Fact is that sometimes music just can't satisfy me, I want to hear people...

So I've been listening to all the Gamespot live videos whole day long (even while gaming), why those movies? I like the subject, and it's nice to have people around you who keep talking about stupid anime Japanese console games on and on.

Speaking of gaming, I can't decide between PSP or X360. They both seem nice. X360 has bigger screen/better looking games. But the PSP is portable/has more functionality...
We'll see.

[µ]

20050514

Riiiiiiiiiiiiise!

I'm watching the Star Wars full trailer on loop right now,... I think I'm going to watch it until the movie comes out (after that I just loopwatch the movie, of course). While waiting, you can always built your own lightsaber or learn how it works...

[µ]

Oh No...

Dungeon Lords was bad, very bad... Not only did that stupid installation sound went on and on only to stop after it swallowed cd3, and copied thousands of .wav files to my hard drive, the rest was even worse.

The IGN reader reviews are giving a perfect description of the game.

  1. Automap is missing.
I thought is was me who did something wrong after trying that **** 'M'-key, just as it said in the options.
  2. Balance is terrible, you will be walking along and suddenly 10 mobs spawn right on you.
Correct, but you get a warning: a nice stutter before the enemies get loaded.
  3. Combat was innovative if it workes as designed, but it doesnt. Many times you will not hit what you are trying to hit. No cursor for the range weapon make it very hard to aim.
  4. Quest log is poorly designed and some quests don't show up on it at all.
It looks like a Windows BC Notepad (Before Christ).
  5. You cannot customize the look of your char.
But you do get a whole lot of races you're never going to play anyway.
  6. You can only carry QTY 1 of one item, the game discards the rest so you cannot save it to sell.
  7. When you load a saved game from the menu, the screen flickers for 10 seconds, before you can play, your eyes will be dead already...
  8. It uses .wav and .bmp, 'cmon!

Hehe, how nice it is to completely destroy a game... I think I'm gonna install Neverwinter Nights again and play those official modules (Kingmaker, Witch Wake and Shadow Guard), or just wait for Dragonshard (not really an RPG but looks also good) or NWN2 (what's the name again?)...

Going to do some serious work now,... Timewasting games. Maybe that we be a nice development company name: 'Timewasters'. But Google tells me there are more than 185.000 entries found for that word, and one wants to be unique...

[µ]

More Gaming...

Installing Dungeon Lords right now, stupid installation music loop...

Since my harddrive is almost full, I'd like to set up a RAID without formatting the whole lot. Because I currently can't stand seeing C: and X: (eXtended storage). And making a new 'Program Files' is not really an option...

Ye hack 'n slasher greets ya.

Pariah (2)

I just died... stumbled of a platform and into the lava we go... But the game is quite nice, graphics are cool, gameplay is quick. Gore and blood level is nice too, I'll fiddle around with the map editor if I've some spare time.

Reminds me that I'm still waiting for The Bards Tale to come out on pc, I still have to install Dungeon Lords too...

[µ]

Pariah

I've been really busy lately, so I'm really happy it's weekend (still a lot of work to do but oh well). I'm installing Pariah right now (cd1, cd2, cd3, cd1 again, cd3, done) and starting up...

Let's see if this plays away.

P.S.: going to update my system to AMD 64 bit (or Xeon) (two CPU's actually!), and a X850PT graphics card soon, should run like a dream then.

[µ]

Blogger

It seems that after all these months, Blogger has grown up a lot... I like it very much, and I liked it even more after I found out that my username was still stored in the system.

So maybe I'll get used to bloggin' after all, and I will do some 'blogsperiments' now. Instead of updating the main site (www.muzeron.tk, if it still lives), I will post some stuff here, if everything will go well, we could continue this...
